Il-ħlewwa ta’ Malta - Renato Briffa

Il-ħlewwa ta’ Malta (The Sweetness of Malta) has been produced with the support of Cilia Products who have generously donated all the books to be sold as fundrising for L-Istrina.

Midsea Books together with Cilia Products have just published a book with well-known sweet recipes by pastry-chef Renato Briffa.

The book elegantly produced in full-colour and hardbound, includes over 70 recipes ranging from figolla to Panettone, from trifle to cassata – all sweets that are synonymous with the Maltese table. In this book, Renato is presenting recipes of sweet confections that are bound not only with the history and customs of our island, but also with those of several other countries. These go back to when our island was ruled by the Arabs, the Knights of the Order of St John, and also the English. In fact, in some cases, recipes are accompanied by some interesting notes about the origins of many of the sweets included in the book.

The recipes are written in an easy-to-follow method and are produced both in Maltese and English, making this book an ideal present, also for those not living in Malta.

Apart from these recipes, the book also includes the history of the Briffa family and their pastry-making tradition as well as outline of the history of Cilia Products which is one of the main suppliers of pastry products in Malta. The book also carries an introduction by Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono who states that "this book, prepared with so much dedication, is an ideal vehicle for the purpose for which it was published."
